The need for a renewable energy source is vital to the resilience and overall survival and security of the nation, physically and economically, in addition into being good path for environmental recovery for our future generations. In my opinion energy production is the element that needs to be further researched and progressed in order to effectively produce a resilient national energy sector. One of the ways in which the nation could succeed at these goals is through a comprehensive push in the installation and use of solar power to augment the use of fossil fuels and nuclear energy. “The combination of distributed energy resources like rooftop solar, battery energy storage, and microgrids could better protect hospitals and government buildings, large employers, and vulnerable communities” (Wagman, 2017).

Solar power transfers would allow for individuals and communities to better survived catastrophic events, whether they are from natural disasters or man-made events. Expected and planned for energy sector failures will allow energy companies to switch off vital substations, allowing for solar panels and batteries at homes and businesses to continue to provide the energy source, saving the substations from overloading or surging due to sudden and unexpected routing of energy. Individuals would become more self-sufficient, which is a detriment to the income of the energy providers, regardless of the resiliency solar would provide to the individual and community. Other detriments to solar power sourcing are in the longevity of the panels and invertors. Solar panels will generally last 20-25 years, with the invertors having an average lifespan of 15 years. The overarching goal of the solar power addition is to build and maintain a reliable and resilient energy grid that utilizes cleaner sources of power.

“The Climate Action Plan calls for upgrading the country’s electric grid to make electricity more reliable, save consumers money on their energy bills and promote clean energy sources” (Obama, 2014). In contributing the realignment of the new solar initiavie, the Energy Department initiated the Solar Market Pathways to support communities at the state, local and tribal levels that expand public / private partnerships participation in solar programs. The commitment of public sector leadership has established the ability of solar power to achieve “more than 850 megawatts of solar deployed – enough to power nearly more than 130,000 homes” (Obama, 2014). Forward leaning initiatives such as this will allow rural areas, government buildings and military bases to utilize solar power instead of the traditional reliance on fossil and nuclear fuels and reduce the nation’s carbon footprint, assisting in lowering global warming concerns.

There are concerns that moving to renewable energy sources, such as solar, provide a number of security questions as well as what type of renewable energy to further develop, such as more nuclear power over the traditional fossil fuel energy sources. The minimization of the fossil fuel source countries could result in an international security concern as well as economically.
